Several years ago I was working in a factory as a millwright maintaining equipment. While disposing of old, worn parts from a broken machine I contemplated the work that had been initially put into them; grooves cut, spirals twisted, holes drilled, finishes buffed. It seemed somewhat sad that the work that someone else had put into these pieces was now being discarded due to malfunction.
With the skills inherent to my trade I began to weld these industrial cast-a-ways into forms; birds, plants and other creatures. The metal sculptures were a permanent home for the wastes of manufacturing.
However, there was a need to further my technical abilities. I decided that blacksmithing was the natural progression to follow.
Through formal training in traditional methods I have improved my ability to transform discarded and raw materials into art. When working with steel I feel that my ideas and emotions are captured in the movement and texture of the medium. With influences from nature, past masters and captured whims the work I create is for the enjoyment of all.
